An Update from YouCook

VN:F [1.9.7_1111]
Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

Hi everyone, it’s Thu, YouCook’s managing editor and I’d like to personally thank you for the energy, support, feedback and encouragement over the past few months as YouCook moved its headquarters to Toronto! I’m going to fill you in on my new project and also on our new team!

The new YouCook project

I am going to Vietnam and will write articles from there of featuring chefs and restaurants from Vietnam and showcasing different cooking styles and ingredients. By following YouCook through this 2 month trip, you will get a sense of foods, restaurants and places you might like to try in your trip to Vietnam or in local restaurants! You already know what kind of pictures and updates you’ll get out of my trip!

Yum Mi

One specific goal I want to accomplish is to get material for my Quest for Yummy Banh Mi. I will be sampling all varieties of my favourite street food of all time and learning how to bake and make everything that goes into Banh Mi. I hope to produce our first YouCookBook through this experience and currently taking pre-orders through Kickstarter.

$35 will get you the PDF version and $50 will get you a hardcopy version of my book. You won’t be charged until I reach my goal of $2500 to get my first batch of the book published and shipped and I have 60 days to collect this! Please help me by pre-ordering a book or pledging whatever you can, $1 will go a long way.

I’m also going to be there to raise awareness for Vietnam social enterprises related to food such as:

  • KOTO where they teach street kids how to cook, basic computer and english skills and give them a second chance at life. I’ll be sitting in on their classes and also giving a cooking demonstration of Canadian food.
  • At Orphanages that OneMoreStep.ca helps collect money to deliver supplies to, I’ll be paying a visit to cook with the nuns.

Follow my adventures:

The new headquarters

I am very impressed with the diversity in Toronto – there are so many different communities and ethnicities and grocery stores and food! It really feels like I’m traveling to a brand new country every time I go from Chinatown to Kensington Market to Korea-town, Little Italy, Greektown, or Persian-town. Every person I meet is passionate about food and I LOVE the energy and vibe here.

YouCook’s team has grown to include very passionate and talented people that make writing, cooking and networking so fun as you can see below. Help me welcome Ming and Irene!

Also special thanks to our guest writers and photographers and friends that have been so supportive. And THANK YOU to all the chefs, small businesses, foodies, restaurants and friends who have really welcomed me back to Toronto. Especially to Jason Bangerter, Bal Arneson, Katherine Hall and Kitt Ritchie, Jerome and Cheryl Gonsalves, Darcy Higgins, Lynn Crawford who have spent time with me and really shown so much skill and passion for what you do.

YouCook has realized that our network has very diverse backgrounds (Vietnamese, Chinese, Malaysian, Korean, Indonesian, Persian, Trinidadian, Italian, Turkish, and more!) and that our interests are in digging deeper into ethnic foods, fresh local food, yummy and healthy foods. And that you, our readers, enjoy similar things. So stay tuned in the coming month for more ethnic restaurant and home recipes and chef interviews. What’s great is that we really can find authenticity right here in Toronto.

Thanks again for following YouCook and keep the comments coming in on how we can improve and cover events and topics that are actually of interest to you!

Introducing Yo’Pho…

VN:F [1.9.7_1111]
Rating: 2.0/5 (1 vote cast)

We’re introducing Yo’Pho after getting many comments about what people liked most about YouCook – the high quality photos. Making YouCook has really made us constantly hungry everyday when we write a blog post or check the site. Now we’re going to take it to the next level with Yo’Pho where you can see a stream of beautiful food photos and links to how to make it or where it was taken. At YouCook, we collectively have a lot of food photos from around the world and in our homes. So we’ll start the site by providing a photo (or a few) a day so that you can take a look to provoke your appetite, and be inspired to try something new.

We’re hoping that you want to contribute your own photos too!If you find yourself frequently uploading photos of food at restaurants or in your kitchen to your blog or Facebook or Twitter, send some of your best photos to us and we’ll post it up! If you’re a food blogger with beautiful images and photos, contact us and we’ll gladly feature you and link to your site!

If you have any comments or ideas for Yo’Pho and YouCook let us know, we want to keep inspiring you to cook and eat delicious things for yourself, your family and friends everyday!

As much as things have changed in the past 6 months, there’s one clear thing that has stayed the same – my passion for all things related to food. Instead of boring you with stories of what happened, what I’ve been up to, where I am now – I put together this short video to give a glimpse into my life in the past 6 months and all the fun and laughter that food has brought and how this blog must live on!

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

So here’s a second attempt at spreading the love of food into your home. Thanks for your support.

Jamie Oliver’s Wish on TED.

VN:F [1.9.7_1111]
Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

I’m so inspired by Jamie Oliver’s excellent and passionate talk on TED about educating ourselves and our children about what real food is could prevent a multitude of diseases and conditions that are killing us. Jamie Oliver was the TED Prize 2010 winner and you should join his food revolution.

Jamie’s Wish is “for everyone to help create a strong sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity”.

I have something to share…

In 2008, I was 50 lbs overweight and diagnosed with Pre-Diabetes (very high glucose-intolerance). It was only then I understood what eating healthy and taking care of yourself really meant.

How I got there was definitely preventable.

It’s 2010 now, and my body can process glucose like everyone else now. I’m not even close to the Pre-Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes zone anymore.

What did I do?
I simply changed my eating habits.
I stopped eating out.
I stopped eating the free food at work and packing my own lunch.
I stopped eating meat. (most of the time)

I started going to farmers markets and buying local fruits and vegetables.
I signed up with a friend to get vegetables delivered every week from a farm.
I didn’t recognize many of the vegetables I received through the CSA farms at first.
I didn’t know how to cook squash, beets, kale and broccoli!
I used every recipe website I could find, bought cookbooks, asked restaurant chefs and friends what to do with these vegetables.
I experimented.
I could see the huge difference in using fresh herbs instead of the dry herb rack.
I found that I loved cooking for friends and having pot lucks and sharing recipes.
I also found that it was a bigger treat to go out to a restaurant once a month rather than everyday.
I shed my pounds quickly and rather happily.
I no longer need an endocrinologist and never want one again.

There’s an increase in people being diagnosed with Pre-Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes in North America and I’m now a big advocate that this can be reversed as well as prevented.

YouCook will stand behind Jamie Oliver’s Wish and show you how easy, quick and tasty it is to cook with basic, fresh, local ingredients.

If you have a recipe to share that:

  • takes no more than 15 min to make
  • costs less than $10 in ingredients
  • all or majority of ingredients are fresh produce found in any generic grocery store
  • is delicious and healthy

Send it to us and we’ll post it!

Food Bank Christmas!

VN:F [1.9.7_1111]
Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

A few weeks ago I went out to help the Vancouver Food Bank at a special event with the local radio station The Beat 94.5 for The Beat Cares outside of Costco and the Vancouver Canucks game.

It was heart warming to see people go to Costco and drop off shopping carts full of food for donations! Also awesome to see vans and trucks pulling up to unload a ton of food and toys! There was definitely a fun heart warming energetic crowd of volunteers there which made you quickly forget how cold it was!

The Vancouver Food Bank set up a volunteer hub where you can see all the special events happening in Vancouver where you can help volunteer for.

It’s a wonderful thing to see how food brings everyone together especially during the holidays. Please let us know about your special volunteer events related to food and feeding everyone around us!

From the team at YouCook, we wish you a truly Merry Holiday Season and a very Happy New Year!
