I’m so pleased to announce that we’ll be partnering up with our friends at Guestaurant.com to host an online a LIVE Guestaurant foodie session with our favourite chef, Jason Bangerter next Saturday, January 14 at 9am EST!

Now that the holidays are over and you want to keep your promises of cooking more often, cooking healthy, buying groceries, buying organic. We can help you with your first steps. Hangout with Executive Chef Jason Bangerter right in his LUMA kitchen at the TIFF Bell Lightbox through Google+ Hangout on the air!

We will be hosting a live discussion about our favourite meat, Chicken. We’ll talk about what free range, organic and factory farmed chicken really means and looks like. This will be followed by some demonstrations on how to debone a chicken and how to cook and not waste any part of the chicken!

If you want to make sure you and your family eat healthy in 2012, this is your chance to be up close and personal with a very talented chef. Ask questions, participate in our discussions and cook along with us on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 9am EST.

Banu’s Shirazi Salad

Shirazi Salad


After all that holiday eating, we figured you’d enjoy starting the new year with a simple delicious salad of tomato, cucumber and onions. Chef Amir Mohyeddin, owner of the delicious Iranian restaurant in Toronto, Banu, spent some time to show us.

Ingredients


Shirazi Ingredients

  • 1 medium sized tomato, $0.50
  • 1/2 english cucumber, $1.50
  • 1/2 medium sized onion
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice, $0.50
  • 1/2 Tbsp olive oil, $0.50
  • to taste, salt and pepper

Instructions


1. Dice the tomato, cucumber and onion into 1/2 inch pieces. Make sure to have an approximately equal amount of tomatoes, cucumber and onion.
2. Mix olive oil and lemon juice.

3. Mix vegetables and dressing. Add pepper and salt.
4. Garnish with mint leaf and serve fresh.

Results

This salad is a great light and fresh tasting appetizer. I love starting off with it at Banu before trying the BBQ meats. Amir’s attention to detail and care about the food, decor and experience at Banu is amazing. If you want to try modern Iranian food and live in Toronto, check it out!

This is my grandmother’s apple pie recipe. I like to add a dash of nutmeg.

Ingredients:

Thinly-sliced apples:
6 cups


White sugar:
3/4 cup

Directions:

1. Cut and peel apples
2. Mix sugar and cinnamon. Use additional sugar for tart apples.
